Theresa Hammond Vickers -- Theresa Hammond Vickers, 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. She was born on the family farm east of Bridgeville on April 12, 1923, daughter of the late Harry and Bessie (Snowberger) Russell. Vickers attended Bridgeville High School and graduated as salutatorian of the Class of 1941.

After graduation, she entered the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Wilmington. Vickers left the nursing program in 1943 and married her fellow high school classmate, Harry A. Following World War II, they opened Hammond’s News Stand on Market Street in Bridgeville and operated it for many years, when small towns in Sussex County had “Mom & Pop” stores. Vickers went to work at Milford Hospital for 13 years.

In September of 2000 he was employed by Perdue Farms as personal assistant to Mr. He enjoyed boating, cooking, golfing, splitting and burning wood, and was an avid Baltimore Ravens and Orioles fan.
